Local VA director informs veterans of services available to them

Humboldt, IA – There are service available to veterans who might need some assistance through the local VA office.

May is National Military Month and a time to recognize those who have severed, are serving, and will serve to protect the U.S. For those who come back they can often need assistance in more way than one. The Humboldt County Veterans Affair (VA) Director Dean Ewoldt wants veterans to know how his office can assist them at a county, state and federal level.

Ewoldt says at a county level his office can assist veterans with their living expenses. He says that they can help them pay their month rent if they need assistance. Other assistance provided by the county office includes help paying utilities bills. Ewoldt also says the county office can provide food vouchers for veterans in need of assistance.

At the state level, the local VA office can assist veterans in a few different ways. Ewoldt says that if a veteran needs assistance in paying for something like a leaking roof his office can help apply for a grant. Veterans with a service related disability is also eligible for a life time fishing license. For a veteran who is 100% disabled, the VA director says they could be eligible for a property tax waiver with the state.

At the federal level, Ewoldt says he’ll assist in getting aid for veterans who have a service related disability. He says that veterans can file a claim with his office and he will file it with Des Moines. The VA director says that there are many types of disabilities that veterans can file for. This includes hearing loss, tinnitus and agent orange related illnesses for Vietnam veterans.
