Humboldt, IA – The beat up high school parking lot will be receiving a complete redo.

The Humboldt Community School District Board of Education continues the process of updating the high school parking lot by approving the contract for construction. During the meeting of the board the decision was made to award the contract to Jensen Builders. Interim Superintendent for the District Mike Sherwood provides details on the project to KHBT.

The project will start on June 22 and expected to be completed by early to mid-August. Sherwood says it should be done by the start of the next school year. The project includes complete removal and replacement of the west side parking lot by the athletic facilities. The lot will also be receiving new lighting.

Sherwood says the parking lot is beyond patching and repairing due to sub-layer erosion and deep potholes. “The parking lot is in quite a state of disrepair,” Sherwood says. The decision was made by members of the board to have a project put together. The district gathered preliminary cost estimates and higher an architect firm to put the project together. Once the project was finalized the board approved to begin the bidding and approval of the contract.

The project cost will come without bonding or debt to the district. Sherwood says the district is able to fund the project “completely from cash.” He assures there is enough money in the reserves within the district facility funds to cover the cost of the project.

The contract awarded to Jensen Builders is estimated to cost the district $1,194,000. The project is expected to being June 22, the day following this year’s graduation.
