City of Humboldt looking at adjusting street parking ordinance

Humboldt, IA – The City of Humboldt is looking into changing an ordinance after a land owner brings forth concerns for his tenants.

Owner of 602 Sumner Avenue A.J. Flurey came to council to speak during time allowed for public input. His concern was that some of his tenants had received parking tickets for parking along 6th Street from 3 to 7 am. He says that he told his tenants they could park there not knowing the ordinance did not allow it.

City Administrator Travis Goedken says that he can remember the ordinance being in place until at least 2005 but council members believe it is older than that. Flurey says the citations each carry a $20 dollar fine but wonders why they didn’t issue a warning. The city administrator says that the citation given is up to the officer’s discretion. There is also no signage at this time to warn against parking during the hours due to work done along the street.

Flurey says that he will comply with whatever council says but wanted to know what to tell his tenants about parking. Council opened discussions on possibly amending the ordinance as they agreed it seemed outdated. City administration was charged with drafting the ordinance amendment to be discussed at a later date.
