Humboldt boys pull away late in win over Algona

Humboldt, IA – Humboldt High School boys basketball uses big fourth quarter to pull away in a home North Central Conference game.

On Tuesday, Jan. 26, the Humboldt Wildcats hosted the Algona Bulldogs. It as a 60-48 victory for Humboldt.

The first quarter started fast for Humboldt who got forward Sam Fischer going for six points in the period. The Wildcats started faster but Algona closed the gap to 13-11 at the end of the first.

The second quarter was similar to the first as a back and forth affair continued. Algona got scoring from five different players in the period to tie the game up at the half at 26.

The see-saw continued for the teams in the third. Humboldt guard Trevor Jacobson hit a couple of three balls on a way to an eight points period. Algona guard Garrett Goche had six in the period. Humboldt escape the period with a 41-40 point lead.

The fourth quarter was heavily tilted towards Humboldt. The Wildcats offense played clean and the defense clamped down for a 19-8 fourth quarter. Humboldt won 60-48.

As a team the Wildcats shot 41.4 percent from the field including 33.3 percent from three point range. They pulled in 38 rebounds and were safe with the ball for only nine turnovers.

Fischer led Humboldt with 19 points on 9-17 shooting (1-3 from behind the arch). He had a double-double with 10 rebounds. Guard Caden Matson had 12 points for Humboldt and was one rebound shy of a double-double.

Algona was led in scoring by Goche who had 13 points. Noah Nelson had 10 points to be the teams second leading scorer.

Humboldt’s record is now 7-5 overall with a 4-3 North Central Conference record. Sam Fischer was named Player of the Game by KHBT.

This game for Humboldt was their senior night. Seniors on the team include Gabe Gidel, Jake Lenning, Sam Fischer, Aiden Christensen and Troy Gerjets.

Humboldt’s next game will be on Friday, Jan. 29. They will be on the road against NCC opponent St. Edmond in Fort Dodge. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:45 pm following the girls varsity game.
