Humboldt girls edge Algona in thriller

Humboldt, IA – Humboldt High School girls basketball holds on at home for a North Central Conference win.

On Tuesday, Jan. 26, the Wildcats hosted the Algona Bulldogs for what was the second meeting this season between the two teams. It was a 50-49 win for Humboldt as they complete the season sweep of the Bulldogs.

The first quarter started off textbook for the Wildcats who got forward Kendal Clark going early for seven points. Humboldt led 18-12 after one.

Algona battled back in the second quarter. Bulldog foward Alexa Chase started getting in rhythm for six in the period. Humboldt still head the advantage at halftime but only by one, 30-29.

The third quarter was tipped to Humboldt by just two points. Clark collected eight more points to help Humboldt edge back out by three. The score after three was 41-38.

Algona didn’t back down from challenge as the fourth quarter began. Guard Lillian Etherington put up nine points in the period to try and stoke the comeback late but the Bulldogs fell just short. Final score of 50-49 in favor of Humboldt.

As a team Humboldt shot 39.1 percent from the field and 27.3 percent from three point range. They pulled in 20 rebounds and had 10 steals.

Clark led Humboldt on the day with 22 points and a double-double with 12 rebounds.. Guard Bae Arnold had nine points on 3-11 shooting (3-10 from behind the arch).

Algona was led by two players in double digit scoring. Etherington finished with 15 points and Chase had 12.

Humboldt is now 12-3 on the season and 6-2 in the North Central Conference. Kendal Clark was named the player of the game by KHBT.

This game was senior night for the Wildcats. Seniors on the roster include: Lauren Murray, Jori Hajek, Bae Arnold, Jayda Hoefer, Emily Zaugg, Kaylee Shaner and Kendal Clark.

Humboldt’s next game will be on Friday, Jan. 29, on the road against NCC opponent St. Edmond in Fort Dodge. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:15 pm.
