Humboldt, IA – On Thursday, May 20, the Humboldt High School boys’ soccer team won their opening round of substate play, 1-0, against Perry.

Humboldt (14-2) came into the match up as the second seeded team in the Class 2A Substate 2 and ranked 12th in the state. Perry came in with a 7-10 record and was winners of seven of their last 10 regular season games.

The game was a hard fought game with no lack of physical play. The score would remain scoreless at the halftime break with both teams getting their equal amount of chances at the other’s goal.

It did not take long in the second half for Humboldt to find the only goal of the game. Goalie Zach Frideres was able to get his hands on the ball, punt it forward to Reyes Falcon who connected with James Gould who went lower right corner to score.

The win for Humboldt is their 15th on the season. James Gould was named player of the game by KHBT as part of the broadcast coverage.

With the win, Humboldt boys’ soccer advances to the substate semi-finals. They will play the three seed, Gilbert, on Monday, May 24. Match time is set for 6:15 pm.
