Matson powers Humboldt baseball past East Sac County

Sac City, IA – On Tuesday, May 25, Humboldt baseball got a season opening win on the road, 12-0, over East Sac County.

After a scoreless first inning Humboldt got a three run homer from short stop Caden Matson. Designated Hitter Christian Lee drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the third.

In the fourth inning , Jacob Heier and Matson were able to score on a pair of wild pitches. Matson got another three run homer in the sixth inning and in the seventh Humboldt strung together three more runs to complete the 12-0 win.

The winning pitcher was Humboldt’s starter Cade Witzke. He pitched four innings, gave up just one hit and one walk with six strikeouts.

East Sac County’s Caleb Villhauer was the losing pitcher. He pitched three innings, gave up four earned runs on two hits, two walks and two hit batters. He struck out four.

Matson was 2-4 in his at bats with six RBIs and a walk. Second baseman Joshua Thurm got on base twice via walks and came around to score both times.

East Sac County’s only hit came from right fielder Dylan Thomsen who was 1-2 in the game.

Humboldt will start their season off 1-0. Caden Matson was named Player of the Game by KHBT as part of the broadcast coverage.

Their next game is the home opener on Thursday, May 26. They will face West Hancock.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 pm, following the JV game.
