Humboldt baseball outlasts Nevada for the win

Humboldt, IA – On Thursday, July 1, Humboldt baseball beat Nevada at home 10-8.

The Humboldt Wildcats got their first runs in the bottom of the first inning. Three runs crossed the plate for Humboldt who kept their opponent scoreless in the top of the opening inning.

Nevada scored two runs in the top of the second inning to get back within one. Humboldt scored one to re-extend the lead to 4-2 after two innings played.

Nevada scored one run in the top of the third inning before Humboldt scored three in the bottom. After a scoreless fourth inning, Humboldt held the 7-3 lead going into the fifth.

Nevada got a big inning to take the lead in the top of the fifth inning. The Cubs scored five runs and led the game 8-7 after five.

In the bottom of the sixth Humboldt scored three runs to get the lead back. The 10-8 advantage held as the seventh inning was scoreless.

Colby Clarken was the starting pitcher for Humboldt. He went four and one-third innings, giving up eight hits, eight earned runs, three walks and three hit batters. He struck out three batters and got a no decision.

The winning pitcher was Humboldt’s Jayden Gargano who went two and two-thirds innings. He gave up three hits and one hit batter while striking out three Cubs.

Humboldt’s record is now 16-7 this season.

The Wildcats’ next game will be Friday, July 2, at home against St. Edmond. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 pm, following a JV game.
