Humboldt drops substate semis

Waverly, IA – On Monday, July 19, Humboldt baseball lost to Waverly-Shell Rock 4-1 on the road in the Class 3A Substate 2 semi-finals.

WSR started the game off fast with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The highlight of the inning was an RBI triple by Chance Key that drove in the first of three runs scored in the frame. Waverly added one more run in the bottom of the second to hold a 4-0 lead for most of the game.

Humboldt scored their lone run of the evening in the top of the sixth inning. Ty Gargano led the inning off by being hit by a pitch and came home to score on an RBI single by Cade Witzke.

Trailing 4-1 in the top of the seventh inning, Humboldt got the bases loaded with two out but were unable to score.

Humboldt’s lone pitcher in the game was Cade Witzke. He pitched all six inning, gave up five hits, four runs, two walks and a hit batter. He struck out two in the loss.

Waverly’s winning pitcher was Carson Graven. He pitched six innings, gave up three hits, an earned run, a walk and hit a batter with a pitch. He struck out 10. Benjamin Buseman pitched the seventh inning and got the save.

Caden Matson led Humboldt by going 2-4 in his at bats. Trevor Jacobson was 0-1 but drew two walks.

The loss in the substate semi-final brings Humboldt’s season to a close at 23-10. Caden Matson was named the Player of the Game by KHBT as part of the broadcast coverage.
