Dakota City woman earns state leadership award

Dakota City, IA – Dakota City’s Kathy Eck received an Iowa Women in Leadership award, for her contributions in encouraging young women to participate in community activities including politics. Eck joined a select group of Iowa women leaders being honored, including gubernatorial candidate Deidre DeJear. Kathy was recognized for her years of service with the Humboldt County Democrats, including three decades as a local party officer. She currently serves as HCD Vice Chairperson. Humboldt County Democrats Chairman Joe Hadar says that she has often served as the glue holding the group together, most recently covering for the chairman at the Midterm County Caucus and Convention.

She was also recognized for her community activities including a lifetime commitment as a local Girl Scout Leader. And while she recently stepped down as a troop leader, she is still actively involved encouraging a new generation to learn and participate in community activities through scouting. Kathy stresses that community involvement is as important as voting in a democracy.

Kathy is the current leader of the Humboldt Democratic Women’s Organization, which holds a stew supper every fall to fundraise for scholarships for worthy HHS seniors. Eck was recognized specifically for promoting equality for rural women and as a positive role model for young women. The local Democratic Women’s Organization caucuses for and presents platform items on political issues affecting all voters.
