Upset in the monsoon, Humboldt routs RPI (3A) No. 1 Clear Lake 34-0

Humboldt, IA – The Humboldt Wildcats upset the class 3A RPI No. 1 ranked Clear Lake Lions in a 34-0 rout Friday night at Mason Maach Field.

The Wildcats and Lions met for the first time on a football field since 2013, and the first quarter would end scoreless. The second quarter of play saw the Wildcats find the endzone three times, all with quarterback Coen Matson with rushing touchdowns at the 11:01 mark for 3 yards, the 6:38 mark for 6 yards, and the 1:42 mark of the second for 3 yards. The third touchdown was set up by a fumble recovery returned to the two yard line by Cyler Cirks.

To end the first half, the Wildcats stopped Clear Lake on a fourth and goal with a goal line stand on a tackle made by Trey Al-Hameed.

The second half saw Humboldt find the endzone two more times, both times on rushing touchdowns by Lance Coon of 18 yards and 7 yards. For the Wildcats, Coon had 26 carries for 161 yards and 2 touchdowns. Matson recorded three rushing touchdowns on a total of 63 yards on the ground. Al-Hameed led the defense with 9 tackles and 2 tackles for loss.

With the win, Humboldt improves to 5-3 (3-1 3A-2) and will end the regular season at Webster City on Oct. 20. Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. with pregame coverage on KHBT at 6:30 p.m.
