NWS says fire weather alert in effect for area

(KHBT) – The National Weather Service has put out an alert concerning elevated fire weather conditions today.

The Agency says the alert for our area is in place due to strong winds out of the southwest at 20 to 30 mph with gusts to near or in excess of 40 mph combined with warm temperatures, dry surface vegetation and cropland, and low relative humidity between 20 and 35 percent.

Any fires that ignite will spread rapidly, especially across far northern into northwest Iowa where winds will be strongest.

The agency says that burning is discouraged under the conditions today and also says to prevent the start of accidental fires when smoking or operating vehicles around dry vegetation or crops. In addition, the strong, gusty winds may cause difficult travel conditions for high profile vehicles on east-west roadways.
