Humboldt, IA – The Humboldt baseball team fell to the Clear Lake Lions 3-1 Wednesday night to split the season series.
The Lions would break a scoreless tie in the top of the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Keeton Jeppeson to score Luke Fuhrman to put the Lions up by one. The bottom half of the inning saw Humboldt tie the game on an RBI double by Keegan Groat to drive in Coen Matson to tie the game at one.
Clear Lake would take the lead for good in the fourth inning on a RBI groundout to shortstop by Nick Strayer to score Fuhrman as the Lions led 2-1.
Humboldt had an opportunity to tie the game with two outs and the bases loaded with Isaiah Busick at the plate in the sixth inning as Fuhrman relieved Lions’ starting pitcher Hudson Carney on the mound. On a 2-2 pitch, Busick lined out sharply to a diving Carney at second base, having switched positions with Fuhrman during the pitching change.
The Lions added an insurance run with two outs in the seventh on a RBI double by Jaxon Anderson to drive in Strayer to give Clear Lake the 3-1 lead. The Wildcats would get two men on in the seventh, but failed to drive home any runs with Fuhrman closing out the win for Clear Lake.
On the mound for the Lions, Hudson Carney would get the win going 5.2 innings, allowing five hits, one earned run, with seven walks and seven strikeouts. In relief, Fuhrman went 1.1 innings, allowing two hits and no runs with one strikeout.
Humboldt’s Cyler Cirks would go the distance pitching all seven innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits, with two walks and four strikeouts, picking up the loss.
