Goldfield, IA – A man died Friday in what authorities believe to be an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound in Goldfield.

According to a press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 8:19 p.m. on November 28, the Humboldt County Dispatch Center received a 911 call reporting an accidental shooting that took place inside a residence at 3372 210th St. in Goldfield.

On scene, authorities determined that 26-year-old George Filmalter was in the dining room with several other people in the residence handling a handgun which he mistakenly understood to be unloaded. Filmalter discharged the firearm into his body and succumbed to his injuries.

Law enforcement officials say no foul play is suspected and there is no threat to the public. Investigators do not believe Filmalter wanted to harm himself or believed the firearm was loaded.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on scene by the Wright County Sheriff’s Office, Eagle Grove Police Department, Renwick Ambulance, Humboldt Ambulance, Humboldt County Medical Examiner, and the Foust Funeral Home from Eagle Grove.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office says the tragic incident should serve as a stark reminder to everyone to treat all firearms as if they are loaded at all times.
