Manson, IA – The Humboldt Wildcats girls’ and boys’ basketball teams swept Manson-NW Webster on the road to begin their seasons in non-conference play Tuesday.
The girls’ basketball program won 66-28 win over the Cougars to begin the night in Manson.
That’s Humboldt Head Girls Basketball Coach Rodd Mooney on the win. Four Wildcats were in double figures in Tuesday’s win, paced by Jada VanDeWalle with 16 points which included a team-leading four made three-pointers. Ava Fisher registered 15 points with three made three-pointers. Landry Lash and Kayleigh Vinsand each had 10 points. Addison McCullough led the Cougars with 11 points and Bellah Aquino recorded 10.
The Humboldt boys’ followed up the girls’ performance with a 64-32 win over Manson-NW Webster. Humboldt Head Boys’ Basketball Coach Ryan O’Hern spoke on the opening night performance.
The win was the first for O’Hern as Humboldt boy’s basketball coach, returning to the North Central Conference for the first time since his playing days as an all-conference standout at Eagle Grove in the early 2000s. He says earning the win at Manson meant a lot due to family connections.
Four Wildcats were in double figures, led by Jackson Flaherty with 15 points. Chase Flaherty had a 13 point night, Cade Birdsell and Valley Davis each had 10.
With each program’s win, the girls’ and boys’ teams begin the season at 1-0. The Humboldt girls’ host Webster City on Thursday, December 4 at 7:30 p.m. while Humboldt’s boys’ are off until Monday, when they head to Fort Dodge at 7:45 p.m. as part of doubleheader which follows the girls’ team.
