Diedrick advances to semifinal, Dettmann out after first day from 2026 IGHSAU State Wrestling Tournament

Coralville, IA – The first day of the 2026 Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) State Wrestling Tournament wrapped up from Xtream Arena in Coralville Thursday.

One Humboldt wrestler, junior 170 pounder Danica Diedrick, advanced to Friday’s session with a pair of pins in the first and quarterfinal round, her wins coming against No. 13 Megyn Hollingsworth from South Hardin-BCLUW in 4:53 in the first round and by fall over No. 12 Stella Beattie of SWAT in just 1:31 in the quarterfinal round.

No. 4 Diedrick is set to wrestle No. 1 Bricsia Garcia-Vasquez from West Liberty in the semifinal round Friday morning, the session starting at 9 a.m.

Junior Laina Dettmann fell one win shy of advancing past the first day of the tournament, wrapping up her lone day 1-2.

The 12 seed Dettmann fell in an 11-1 major decision to No. 5 Hannah Brandhorst of Woodward-Granger in the first round. Dettmann won by fall over No. 13 Sadie Clarahan of Sigourney-Keota in 2:23 in the first consolation round. She concluded her season with a loss in a 7-4 decision to No. 6 Makenna Kurth of Waukon  won by a 7-4 decision over No. 12 Laina Dettmann (Humboldt) in the consolation second round.

Newell discussed the debut of Dettmann at the tournament.

Dettmann concluded her season at 35-10 with a regional runner-up finish and a 1-2 performance during her first state tournament appearance.
