Humboldt, IA – The final Make-A-Wish Hawkeye-Cyclone Celebrity Softball Game is scheduled for Sunday at the Humboldt High School softball field, with organizers expecting to reach a major fundraising milestone.
The event has helped raise money for a Humboldt County Make-A-Wish endowment. Iowa State alum, Humboldt native and former Make-A-Wish Iowa board member Ryan Harklau says the goal of $300,000 is expected to be surpassed this weekend.
“I think we’re going to clear that $300,000 mark, and this wish will be endowed forever. So the Humboldt County area will be able to grant a wish every single year as we go forward.”
Harklau says the endowment will help ensure local children receive wishes through Humboldt County rather than waiting on a larger regional list.
Former Iowa All-American and NFL tight end Dallas Clark says his involvement with Make-A-Wish began during his rookie season with the Indianapolis Colts and has remained close to his heart ever since.
“You look at these kids, and you shake these kids’ hands, and you go visit them in the hospital, and you see what they’re going through, then it pales in comparison of what you think is a tough day. And it’s such a beautiful thing to see these kids fight.”
Gates open Sunday at 4 p.m. with family activities, food, and an autograph session featuring current Iowa and Iowa State athletes. The softball game begins at 6 p.m. Admission is $10, with proceeds benefiting Make-A-Wish Iowa.
Organizers say the event will celebrate past wish recipients while helping ensure wishes continue to be granted for Humboldt County children for years to come.
