Today, Wednesday, May 6 is national nurse appreciations day. While nurses all over the country continue to be on the front lines in the fight against the COVID-19 virus, KHBT talked with Humboldt County Memorial Hospital Chief Nurse Executive, Victor Bycroft, about the importance of nurses.

In a field that is centered on being a team where everyone is important, Bycroft says nurses play a pivotal role on that team. “Nurses are really the heart and soul of that team” he says. The nurses are going to be the ones who spend the most time with patients. Furthermore nurses are going to be the most hands on during the patient’s healthcare experience.

He says that being a nurse is a great career due to career path options and the impact that people in the profession have. “There is always job opportunities as a nurse” he continues. He talks about how often times just one type of nurse is scene at an inpatient care facility or doctor’s office there are multiple types of nurses located throughout the hospital. He also says that when looking at larger hospitals there are many diverse things that can be done as a nurse and that there isn’t a limit to one aspect of health care. In comparison, in a smaller hospital there is opportunity to do even more and gain a broader knowledge. Bycroft also highlights the impact that nurses get to have on their patients’ health is a huge plus.

During these tough times Bycroft says that his team at HCMH has really stepped up to continue to provide the same quality healthcare. “Of course I love my staff, they do a fantastic job” he says “right now especially.” While the normal day to day has been altered at all hospitals, the chief nurse executive says his staff continues to show up and smile while being kind to all those who come in. “They want to do the best job they can.”

In closing he gives one last reminder to remember and thank nurses. “Just remember to be kind to them and say thank you to your nurses.”
