Wall Lake, IA – On Tuesday, May 11, Humboldt High School girls’ soccer falls 1-0 in overtime against East Sac County at the Wall Lake Athletic Complex.
This was the second meeting of the season between these two teams. The first on April 13 was a 4-0 East Sac County Raider victory at the Humboldt High School Soccer Field.
In their second bout the teams were more evenly matched. While East Sac County won the time of possession battle. Wildcats Goalie Maria Elizondo made multiple timely saves to keep the game scoreless, including a blocked penalty kick and rebound chance in the 21st minute.
After the scoreless regulation periods, the game did not get very deep into overtime. In the 82nd minute, East Sac County won a corner kick. Elizondo attempted to play the ball but physical play hindered her chances. The ball fell to the feet of Raider Makayla Meyer who powered it in from close range to get the golden goal winner.
Humboldt reports taking 10 shots, four of which were on goal. Ava McIntire led the team in shots with four, half of them on goal.
Elizondo played the whole game in goal for the Wildcats. She is credited with 10 saves.
East Sac Country reports taking a total of 24 shots, half of which were on goal. Meyer took eleven shots, seven on goal.
Raider Goalie Aleisha Thayer is credited with three saves and a clean sheet. She played the entire game in goal.
Humboldt girls’ soccer is now 3-10 on the season. Maria Elizondo was named player of the game by KHBT as part of the broadcast coverage.
The next match for Humboldt will be on Thursday, May 13, against Fort Dodge at Dodger Stadium. It is scheduled for 6 pm.
