Bode, IA – The Humboldt County Law Enforcement Center is investigating a counterfeit $20 bill that was used to make a transaction in Bode.
Chief Deputy Corey Lampe of the Humboldt County Sheriff’s office says the bill was first reported by a business. The store knows the bill came in on Tuesday but does not know the exact time it was accepted. There are no suspects at this time.
The chief deputy says they are unsure if this was a case of someone using the counterfeit not knowing it was false currency or a case of intentional use.
The next step for local law enforcement will be to submit the bill to the Secret Service. Further direction on a course of action will come from the federal agency.
While Humboldt County does not typically have a problem with counterfeit currency, one or two will occasionally show up. It is encouraged that people be vigilant and inspect cash before it is accepted to make sure it is not obviously counterfeit.
