Humboldt, IA – Iowa State Patrol Trooper Paul Gardner was at Humboldt High School from 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. today giving lectures to students on seatbelt use and safety and allowing students to use the seatbelt convincer, a device that demonstrates riding in a car seat with a seat belt that simulates a crash at 5-10 mph.
According to Gardner, 56 percent of fatalities in traffic accidents in Iowa involved non-seatbelt use. He says the convincer device shows the impact from a low speed, so users can only imagine what a bigger impact can cause.
In addition to seatbelts, The Iowa State Patrol, Humboldt Police Department and Humboldt County Sheriff’s office will have an increased presence Wednesday as part of the Rural High Five safety program to curb OWIs, distracted driving and seatbelt use in the county.
