Perry, IA – One person has been killed and five more injured during a shooting at Perry High School early Thursday morning.
At a press conference Thursday afternoon, the Iowa Department of Public Safety’s Mitch Mortvedt revealed that a sixth grade student at Perry Middle School had been killed in the shooting, and four more students and one administrator had been injured. The names of the victims were not released by law enforcement officials.
The shooter has been identified as 17-year-old Dylan Butler, who was a student at Perry High School. Mortvedt says Butler died of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was armed with a pump-action shotgun as well as a small caliber handgun. Law enforcement and emergency personnel also were said to have disarmed at least one improvised explosive device (IED), which was ruled to be “rudimentary”.
The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation says while the investigation is still ongoing, it is believed that Butler acted alone in the incident.
