Fort Dodge, IA – The Fort Dodge Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Friday afternoon in the city’s north-central neighborhood.
According to a news release from the department, the Webster County Telecommunications Center received a 911 call at approximately 1:52 p.m. Friday, July 24, reporting that a man had been shot in the 1300 block of 3rd Avenue North.
When officers arrived, they located an adult male suffering from a single gunshot wound. Officers immediately began providing emergency medical care until personnel from the Fort Dodge Fire Department arrived. The victim was transported to UnityPoint–Trinity Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
The victim’s identity has not yet been released as authorities work to notify family members.
Police said a second adult male was located at the scene and detained after being identified as the shooter.
Members of the Fort Dodge Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division responded to process the scene, collect evidence, and interview potential witnesses.
Investigators said they are continuing to follow up on the case and are withholding additional details about how the shooting occurred in order to protect the integrity of the investigation.
Authorities have determined the shooting was an isolated incident involving two individuals who knew each other, and they emphasized there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The Fort Dodge Police Department is asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has surveillance or doorbell camera footage from the area around the time of the shooting to contact the department. Information can also be submitted anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
The Fort Dodge Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Fort Dodge Fire Department and the Webster County Sheriff’s Office.
Police said additional information, including the victim’s identity and any potential criminal charges, will be released as the investigation continues.
