Humboldt, Iowa — Cold weather mixes the perfect storm with anyone having any form of a heart disease and it is important to consider some circumstances with the weather hitting the current temperatures.

Courtney Palmer of HCMH says that “your risk for a heart attack may actually go up” because of the current weather conditions.

Palmer also says that “cold weather can degrees the supply of oxygen of rich blood in your heart muscle and cold weather can sometimes put you in situations that force your heart to work harder.”

One common situation is going out and shoveling heavy wet snow. If you’re at risk for heart attack the advice is to see if you know someone who can do it for you. If you have to do it yourself then it would be a good idea to not eat a heavy meal or drink alcohol before hand.
