Des Moines, IA — It’s been 13 years since a governor veto has been overrode by the state congress, but some Democrats are pushing back to try to rally against Governor Reynolds decision to veto a bill that would’ve expanded Iowa’s laws for cannabis medication.

House file 732 passed both the house (96-3) and senate (40-7) in Iowa but was eventually vetoed by Governor Reynolds after getting counsel from a state advisory board. Senator Joe Bolkcom (D) is one of the leading voices spearheading this movement to overturn the veto. He says there’s no reason to wait to act as it takes just 36 Republicans to override the veto.

2006 was the last time legislators overturned a veto which was done to former Governor Tom Vilsack’s rejection of a bill put into place added constraints on the government’s ability to overtake land for development.
