Lee reminds community to respect, support the military

Humboldt, IA – A local veteran talks respect and support for those serving in the armed forces during a month set aside for military appreciation.

May is military appreciation month and a great time to reflect on those who are, have or will put their lives on the line to defend the freedoms in this county. No matter what branch of the armed services they have or are serving in, the military has touched every live in this country. Vietnam veteran and Commander at the Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) Post 5240 in Dakota City, David Lee, shares his appreciation for the armed forces.

He says that the military has always been there to fight and protect the freedoms offered in the United States. “Fight for your freedom, your right to do what you want to do” Lee says. “They fight to protect you and I think it is very important that we keep them people in the military.” He also says it is important to support and respect them for what they have done.

Lee served during the Vietnam War from January of 1968 to November of 1971. He has been a part of the VFW since the 1980s and has served as the commander for several years. He has also worked with the Veterans Affairs office since 1983 to help assist veterans in the community.

In closing David Lee gives one last reminder that to thank veterans for their service in defending freedom. “If it wasn’t for military and the people serving now, that’s why you got the freedom you have today in this country.”
