Humboldt County, IA – A special election is coming for all of Humboldt County as the cities and unincorporated areas look to renew their Local Option Sales Tax.

On Tuesday, Sept. 8, the entirety of Humboldt County will be participating in an election to renew the tax commonly referred to as L.O.S.T. This tax is not a new tax and applied one cent on the dollar for all purchases made within the county any incorporated city limit. The funds from L.O.S.T. are used for various reasons and can vary from city to city for any “lawful purpose.”

The reason for a special election when renewing local option sales tax is because a certain percentage of the public has to vote and public measures cannot be taken during a general election. If L.O.S.T. is not approved for a city or the unincorporated areas those entities will not have access to those funds.

More about Local Option Sales Tax and the Sept. 8 special election will be reported by KHBT.
