Dakota City, IA – Humboldt County is updating their drainage tile crossing policy for the secondary roads department.

On Monday, Sept. 21, during the board of supervisors meeting County Engineer Ben Loots present a resolution to the board for approval. This resolution provides an update to the county’s current tile crossing policy.

Loots says the update does include some updated language. The policy states a requirement for boring to occur under any paved roads. The county will cover 50% of the boring cost up to $15,000. Cutting into gravel roads is still allowed under the new policy and the county will cover the cost of 50% up to $2,000 dollars. The policy requires approval to work in the county right of way, sign off from the downstream neighbors, application for a drainage permit and proof of contractor insurance.

One concern brought to Supervisor Bruce Reimers before the meeting was that the new policy would add on additional costs over what the state laws say. Loots says that this new policy does not do any such thing.

The resolution was approved by the board of supervisors as presented unanimously.
