Humboldt boys basketball tops St Edmond for second NCC win

Humboldt, IA – Humboldt High School boys basketball uses a second quarter surge to beat St. Edmond in North Central Conference win.

On Friday, Dec. 18, the Humboldt Wildcats hosted the St. Edmond Gaels in an NCC game. It was a 60-49 win for Humboldt who started slow but dominated the second and third quarters to beat the familiar opponent.

In the first quarter Humboldt found themselves trailing 12-10 by the end of it as St. Edmond got five points from forward Drew Schaeffer. The second quarter was a bounce back period for Humboldt as guard Trevor Jacobson hit three shots from deep ball range to help build a 30-24 Wildcats lead as the teams went into the locker room.

In the third quarter Humboldt continued to build their lead by outscoring St. Edmond 17-9 in the period to be leading 47-33. In the fourth quarter the Gaels go a bench player in Anthony Lacina going as he managed to score eight points (six free throws) but they were unable to comeback as Humboldt won 60-49.

For Humboldt they shot 39.2 percent from the field as a team and 45.5 percent from three point range. The Wildcats pulled in 34 team boards and collected nine steals.

Jacobson led the way for Humboldt with a 19 points as he went 7-7 from the field including 5-5 from three point range. Forward Sam Fischer had a double-double for Humboldt with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

St. Edmond was led by forward Hayden Mayer who had 14 points on the evening. guard Jackson Palmer head 12 for the Gaels and Lucina’s night ended with eleven points.

With the win Humboldt is now 5-1 on the season and 2-1 in the North Central Conference. Next up for the Wildcats will be a road game against another NCC foe in Hampton-Dumont-CAL. Tip-off from Hampton is scheduled for 7:45 pm following the girls varsity game.
