Humboldt County, IA – Extreme cold conditions are going to be effecting much of the area through the weekend.

A cold front is going to sweep across all of Iowa Thursday which will bring some less than favorable weather this weekend. Brooke Hagenhoff with Des Moines National Weather Service provides details to KHBT.

Early Thursday the precipitation is expected to be a little bit of light rain or drizzle. For northern Iowa the rain will transition quickly to snow.

As the “very strong” cold front advances across the region gusty winds will reach 35-40 miles-per-hour. In some areas the wind could be even stronger. This will cause both the falling snow and the snow on the ground to blow around creating blizzard like conditions.

Behind the front the temperatures will begin to decline very quickly. Hagenhoff says it will go from mid to upper 30s in the morning to around 15 degrees by the later afternoon. Those cold temperatures are expected to last through the weekend.

While the blizzard warning is only expected to last for 24 hours from 6 am Thursday to 6 am Friday the cold will be around much longer. Hagenhoff says the Des Moines National Weather Service can see highs in the single digits well into next weeks forecasts.
