Humboldt, IA – Catholic Schools week is a time for the local catholic school to enjoy fun activities while celebrating all they have to offer the students.
January 31 to February 6 is National Catholic School Week. It is a week set aside to recognize all that a catholic education has to offer young students. Humboldt’s St. Mary Catholic School’s Principal Cindy Edge talks with KHBT about the week.
Locally the week started with a Sunday fundraiser for a scholarship for former St. Mary’s student before continuing with a themed week for the current elementary students. During each day students can dress up to match the theme as well as participate in activities and enjoy snacks that match the theme.
Edge says that Monday was “favorite team day,” Tuesday was “western day,” Wednesday was “mismatch/backwards day,” Thursday is “career day” and Friday is “school spirit day.”
The principal says students have told her they are most excited for career day and she looked forward to see what student would dress up as.
Edge says that there is a lot of value in having a faith based education at an early age because it provides personal stability in the near and distant future. “It helps create a strong religious foundation” she says.
As a student grows up and attends middle and high school it helps them know their faith is strong. Edge says it extends into adulthood as well when they might have to lean on their faith to provide for their needs and the needs of their families.
The principal says that taking a week of recognition is now just about the school but everyone who contributes. A lot of people put time, effort and financial support into St. Mary Catholic School.
Edge says these efforts create a positive learning environment for the students. “I think we need to just stop and recognize all of the good things that’s happened, all of the successes we have and continue to build on our success.”
St. Mary School in Humboldt provides a balance of quality religious education and opportunities for all students in preschool through sixth grade.
Their mission “is to provide a catholic education in a Christ-centered environment which enables students to attain religious and academic excellence.”
