Humboldt softball powers past Algona Garrigan

Algona, IA – On Thursday, June 24, Humboldt softball beat Bishop Garrigan (Algona) on the road 18-10.

The first inning wase the only scoreless inning of the game. Both teams had their chances with runners on third by good defense erased all chances.

Humboldt struck first in the top of the second. Kendal Clark was able to drive in two runs with a double. The top of the third doubled the score for Humboldt thanks to Alexis Hansen’s home run that carried two runs.

Going into the fourth, Humboldt lead 4-0, the Humboldt Wildcats found five runs. The inning was highlighted by a two run homer from Jori Hajek. Algona Garrigan struck back in the bottom of the inning with six runs on three base hits.

Score now 9-6, Humboldt on top, the Wildcats led off the top of the fifth with back-to-back solo home runs by Clark and Hajek. Algona Garrigan got one back in the bottom of the of the inning after a lead of walk by Ava Bartolo.

Humboldt scored one more in the top of the sixth to increase the lead to 12-7 going into the final inning. In the top of the seventh, the Wildcats scored six runs, highlighted by an RBI double by Clark. Algona Garrigan got three runs back but ultimately Humboldt got the win 18-10.

Elsie Hubbell pitched the complete game for Humboldt. She gave up 13 walks, seven earned runs, five hits and two hit batters in the win.

Clark finished the day 4-5 (three doubles and a home run) in her at bats with four RBIs and a walk. Hajek was 3-4 with two home runs and three RBIs.

Humboldt’s record is now 11-9 this season. Kendal Clark was named the Player of the Game by KHBT as part of the broadcast coverage.

The next game for the Wildcats will be on Friday, June 25, on the road against North Central Conference foe Hampton-Dumont-Cal (10-8, 6-5 NCC). Humboldt won the first meeting of the season, 11-1, on June 7.

First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 pm.
