Gowrie, IA – Two people were injured Sunday afternoon after a train collided with a car in Gowrie.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, the crash happened around 3:20 p.m. Sunday at the railroad crossing on Lincoln Street.

Investigators say a 2016 Hyundai Sonata driven by 45-year-old Dirk Janssen of Colo was heading east on Lincoln Street when it was struck by a northbound Union Pacific train. A passenger in the car, 62-year-old Mary Harrison of Colo, was airlifted from the scene with serious injuries. Janssen was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital.

Several roadways in Gowrie were temporarily closed following the crash, but east-west routes had reopened by Sunday evening after the train was cleared from the area.

Police continue to urge drivers to use caution because of ongoing road construction in Gowrie. The crash remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.
