NWS – An Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect for most of central Iowa until 9:00 p.m. Tuesday.
Dangerously hot conditions will continue through the day, with heat index values reaching 110 degrees in some locations.
The National Weather Service says the combination of extreme heat and high humidity will significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Residents are urged to drink plenty of water, stay in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible, avoid prolonged time in the sun, and check on elderly relatives, neighbors, and anyone without adequate cooling.
If you must be outdoors, wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and try to schedule strenuous activities for the early morning or evening hours. Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, and seek medical attention immediately if symptoms become severe.
Forecasters also note that the prolonged stretch of dangerous heat could continue into the Fourth of July weekend, so be prepared for several more days of oppressive conditions.
