Car fails to yield, causes property damage, totals vehicle

Humboldt, IA — Two cars are totaled and six people are left with possible injuries after a car failed to yield at a stop sign over the weekend.

According to a police report from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, Jennifer Smith, 38, of Humboldt, was travelling northbound on 5th Street North in Humboldt Saturday night. Another vehicle, driven by Frank Orona, 18, of Humboldt, was driving eastbound on 8th Avenue North.

Orona stopped at a posted stop sign and proceeded into the intersection, striking Smith’s car; which then hit a fence on the property of Humboldt County Fairgrounds, causing approximately $400 in damage. Smith’s vehicle, a 2010 Chevrolet Equinox, was totaled due to the head-on collision, and had to be towed from the scene.

Orona’s car, a 2013 Nissan Murano was also totaled. Smith and Orona, along with four minor passengers, were transported by family members to Humboldt County Memorial Hospital, with complaints of injuries.

Orona has been given citations for the following: Failure to provide proof of financial liability, violation of instruction permit limitation, and failure to obey stop sign and yield right of way.
