Humboldt, IA – Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the local VFW will be hosting their Memorial Day Service on KHBT this year.

Monday is Memorial Day. It is a time to reflect on those who fought and protected this country and the freedoms offered in the United States. The Veterans of Foreign Wars post 5240 in Dakota City Commander David Lee tells KHBT the VFW goes out each year to honor those who have served.

He says that every year they have the Memorial Day Service. It includes a speech by Lee, a community prayer and famous military speeches recited by members of the Humboldt High School speech team. Member of the VFW will also go to each cemetery in the area, have a flag raising, a 21 gun salute and a benediction for every veteran buried in the cemetery.

However, due to the circumstance this year, the VFW will not be hosting an in person service. Instead they will be broadcasting the whole service here on 97.7 the Bolt. The ceremony will start at 9:30 am on Monday and include Lee’s speech, famous military speeches recited by Humboldt High School student, an invocation, a 21 gun salute and a playing of taps.

Tune in for the entire service this Monday on KHBT as we honor those who have served our country.
