Iowa Fruit and Vegetable week

Ames, IA – State governor proclaims the week to be designated to recognize the horticulture industry in Iowa.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds proclaims this week, June 22 to the 26 as Iowa fruit and vegetable week. In recognition to the economic impact the horticulture industry has in the state the governor wants to take the week to recognize all those involved in this industry. The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach office releases a statement on the week.

Extension Vegetable Production Specialist with ISU, Ajay Nair says designating a week to the industry is a significant event. It give a chance for Iowans to celebrate the important role horticulture has in an individual’s health and nutrition. It also helps create awareness that the commercial industry has in the state.

The Iowa Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association President Luke Funk reminds consumer that “when you buy fruits and vegetable grown in Iowa, you know they’re local.” He also says it provides the farmers and their families a viable income in horticulture. Local support for Iowa fruit and vegetable farms is a key part to the governor’s proclamation for the week.

The Iowa commercial horticulture industry contributes about $48 million dollars to the state’s economy each year. The Humboldt County Extension and Outreach office plans to join in on the celebration this week by creating awareness through social media.
