Des Moines, IA – The Alzheimer’s Association Iowa Chapter is helping guide families through the holiday seasons during a unique year.

Announced via a press release from the states chapter they say the holidays can be a “joyous time” for families. However, for a family impacted by the effects of Alzheimer’s or dementia it can be challenging. The current COVID-19 pandemic adds even more challenges. While Alzheimer’s and dementia don’t raise the risks of contracting the virus, related behaviors, increased age and common health conditions accompanying dementia may increase risk.

The Alzheimer’s Association is offering tip to help families plan appropriately for both in-person or virtual celebrations this season.

For in-person celebrations they encourage families to “celebrate smart. Celebrate safe” by limiting sizes for gathers and to make sure all appropriate efforts are taken for sanitation. The association also encourages a “person centered approach” by focusing on what’s enjoyable for the person living with Alzheimer’s. Keeping it simple also is a great way to celebrate this season.

For virtual holiday celebrations the state’s chapter recommends scheduling any sort of tele-call ahead of time to make sure everyone invited can access it. If a family is unable to share a meal or dessert in person with their loved one living with Alzheimer’s see if it can be dropped off or delivered. Going for a walk around the neighborhood is also a great way to enjoy a safe outing with a loved one dealing with dementia or Alzheimer’s this season.

The holidays can be a littler challenging for those living with Alzheimer’s and their families. The Alzheimer’s Association Iowa Chapter wants people to know they can still celebrate responsibly.
