Former Humboldt County Supervisor Carl Mattes Dies at 88

Newton, IA – Former Humboldt County Supervisor and longtime educator Carl Mattes has died.

At Monday’s Humboldt County Board of Supervisors meeting, Supervisor Bruce Reimers paid tribute to Mattes.

“Carl was a member of the Board of Supervisors quite a while. He’d been in the community for quite a while as the Humboldt High School Superintendent, been in several other school districts. Carl was always a good man. We extend our condolences to their family and wish them well.”

Mattes died Friday, June 5 at Mercy One Newton Medical Center. He was 88.

Mattes served on the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors from 2007 through 2018 and also held leadership roles with the Iowa State Association of Counties, including serving as president. Mattes also spent a career in education as a teacher, principal, and superintendent. He served as Superintendent of Humboldt County Schools for four years during the 1990s after joining the district in 1993.

Additionally, Mattes served on the Board of Directors of the Iowa Girls Athletic Union and later as its president.

A memorial service will be held June 16 at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Newton.
